Calipuy

It is located in the department of La Libertad, provinces of Santiago de Chuco, and VirĂº, Santiago de Chuco and Chao districts. It extends over an area of 64 000 hectares. The Reserve has the most northern population of guanacos (Lama guanicoe) in South America. The population exceeds the 600 cameloids, and they are the northern boundary of the natural distribution of this species. Other species of protected fauna living in this area are the mountain lion (Puma concolor), the Sechuran fox (Pseudalopex sechurae), the Peruvian mountain vizcacha (Lagidium peruanum), the spectacled bear (Tremarctos ornatus), the Andean condor (Vultur gryphus), the Turkey vulture (Cathartes aura jota), the black vulture (Coragyps atratus), the scarlet-fronted parakeet (Aratinga waglen), the Ornate Tinamou (Nothoprocta ornate), the Andean Lapwing (Vanellus resplendens), and the black-winged ground-dove (Metriopelia melanoptera). Reptiles such as the lance-head pit viper (Bothrops sp.)



The vegetation consists of small and medium-sized semi-ligneous and herbaceous species, which grow on rocky soils, particularly abundant on the mountain slopes, as well as many cacti and succulent species.One of the main tourist attractions in Calipuy are the archaeological remains that can be found in different areas of the Reserve.The principal objectives of the Calipuy National Reserve are to preserve the existing populations of guanacos, as well as the wild fauna and flora; to promote the scientific research of natural resources in the region; and to promote and control tourist development by increasing the socioeconomic development in the region.
